Rotary Club Delhi Central was formed on May 23, 1975, when five Gentlemen – Mr. O.P. Jain, Mr. Jaswant Rai, Mr. R.C. Jain, Mr. V.K. Verma and Mr. Chakradhari Aggarwal met over lunch at Hotel Oberoi Inter Continental and decided to Serve Humanity. Rotary Club Delhi North sponsored our Club and our Club was chartered with effect from May 31, 1975 and received its Charter from District Governor Rtn. M.L. Manchanda.

Rtn. O.P. Jain became the Charter President of the Club. At that time our Club was in RI District 310, which stretched from Srinagar to Moradabad in U.P. and comprised of the States of Jammu & Kashmir, Pubjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Western UP.

The charter members also included PP Rtn Rakesh Jain, Rtn. Suresh C. Jain, PP Rtn. (Dr) Ravinder Kakkar and Rtn. Vinod Jain along with the above gentlemen and they would meet on Saturday over Lunch to conduct Club meetings at Hotel Oberoi Intercontinental.

Installation function of Club President Late Rtn. Jaswant Rai was held on July 26, 1976, and the Hon’ble President of India Mr. Fakruddin Ahmed was the Chief Guest on the occasion. It was reckoned as the first occasion in the history of the Rotary world where the Head of the Country had graced any function organised solely by any Rotary Club.

In the very first year of its existence, our Club formed a Rotaract Club which received its charter in November 1976, when the Chief Guest on the occasion was then Union Minister of Information, and former Prime Minister Mr. Inder Kumar Gujral.

In 1977, the Rotary District was bifurcated into two Rotary Districts-309 and 310 and our Club continued to be in RI District 310. During 1984-85 all the clubs of Delhi were placed in one RI District 301, which was created on the reorganisation of all the Rotary Districts in India. Later on this RI District was renumbered as 3010.

Rotary Club of Delhi Central was barely two years old when it took upon itself the task of organising District Conference of RI District 310 in February 1978 under the dynamic leadership of its President Rtn. Chakradhari Aggarwal. This conference was held in Vigyan Bhawan and was hailed as one of the most successful District Conferences. The conference was inaugurated by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who came to India on his chartered flight from the US. Rtn. Harish C. Malhotra, from Shimla, who later became a member of our Club, was elected District Governor Nominee at this very District Meet.

In 1979 our Club started an Eye Bank project at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital duly assisted by the Eye department of SGRH. Our member who initiated this project was an eminent Eye Surgeon in SGRH Late Dr. S.R.K. Malik and the project is still running and managed by the Eye department of SGRH with the support of our Rotary Club.
